Scientists Are Speed Breeding Plants in a Race to Beat Climate Change


At one point in time not too long ago, NASA set itself the task of creating a bottomless source of food supplies for its crew who were due to be in space for an extended period of time. To do this, it kept food crops in constant illumination, bathed in light sources around the day to try to stimulate more rapid development. Now, with speed breeding, there’s enough of a development speed to accommodate a further four. Using an array of LED lights, they subject the crops to almost a whole day’s worth of light, massively boosting the rate and intensity of photosynthesis. One of the many positives about speed breeding is that it doesn’t require any revolutionary technology or overwhelming operational costs, with the possibility of seeing a rapid uptake in food manufacture all over the world

Better than the Real Thing

Proponents of speed breeding techniques report that most of the naysaying to the method that they encounter is from people who believe inducing faster growth will lead to a weaker yield, more undernourished looking crops and less potential for the seed to set in the future. Scientists actually report back that speed breeding actual results in more fertile and healthy looking crops than those grown through standard farming techniques. Nor is speed breeding only effective on wheat. Researchers have found it’s also possible in a single year to develop six generations of barley, chickpeas and durum wheat.

Genetic Limitations

For certain plants to flower properly, they need to go through a period of intensely low temperatures. Placing these crops straight into the process of speed breeding results in hoary development and little to no flowering. If the flower has already endured a cold snap beforehand, as it would in the wild, the flower beforehand does, however, respond well to the technique. While the price of industrial-quantity LED lighting is perhaps not yet cheap enough for the technique to be cost-effective in commercial farming, it’s certainly making a difference to crop genetics, and will surely be a decisive factor on the war against global hunger.

The study involved 54 people from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Participants were 18 years old, and all were diagnosed severe mental problems.

Participants were asked, “Who or what is the most important for your mental health?” Sixty percent of the patients answered that pets were important to them. Among the respondents, more than 46% (25 participants), said that pets helped them in their daily lives.

Patients reported various reasons why pets were so important to them. Some of them said that they distracted them from feelings, thoughts about suicide. Pets cause owners a sense of responsibility; caring for animals also gives a sense of security. And, finally, pets give owners a sense of the meaning of life.

Pet owners say, “When an animal comes and sits next to you, you know how it needs you as much as you need it.”
